Coin Hoard from the Gallo-Roman Villa in Monchy-le-Preux (Pas-de-Calais)

In 1992, major civil engineering works required by the construction of the « Artoispôle » industrial zone, brought the archaeological department of Arras to examine a 5 ha area in which a Gallo-Roman villa, built along the antique Arras-Cambrai way, was discovered. The numerous findings witness an occupation of the area that stretches over six centuries, from the late Tène to the beginning of 5th century A.D. The important coin hoard, found disseminated uniquely on the area where the residential dwellings were erected, is made up of 121 coins, amongst which is a unique little Gallic bronze (Atrebate) with the CAI-TIO / MANDV legends. The 120 Roman coins dating back to the period between the Republic and the first years of the Theodosian dynasty offer, in particular with its important number of Valentinian aes 3 (21 items), a classical outlook for this thriving and protected part of northern Gaul, distant from the Rhineland limes. The major interest of this collection lies in the presence, among the small Valentinian bronzes, of two coins severed on the edge of their rim, a feature already noted on the neighbouring and contemporary observation site of Athies.
