Résumé | In this article, we suggest to localize the production of the Carolingian Gospel Book, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, latin 11959, in the abbey of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, in the Paris region, during the first half of the IXth century. This manuscript shows at the beginning a series of illuminations, with 14 canon tables, 4 Evangelists portraits and a monumental Latin cross, and, in addition, a few ornated initials. All these illuminations show mixed influences, from insular, merovingian and Charlemagne’s court arts. Like some characters of the script, most of them are seen in other manuscripts originating from the abbey of the Fossés. A notable feature of this manuscript is the cross opening the Gospel of saint Matthew, filled with insular interlacings. This cross has a strong symbolic value, at a time when theologians have launched a debate around the signification of the cross and when the Crucifixion is progressively replacing the cross in the pictures. |
