| Résumé | Accrédité par l’Élysée pour suivre et relater en images les voyages des présidents dans la France de l’entre-deux-guerres, le journal L’Illustration s’est acquitté de manière variable de son rôle de relais du cérémonial officiel. Les fluctuations sensibles dans l’attention portée aux déplacements et aux gestes des différents chefs de l’État, entre 1918 et 1940, dénotent des prises de position implicites, que traduisent à leur tour – par leur vocabulaire iconographique, leur cadrage ou leur mise en page – les photographies sélectionnées par la rédaction. Loin de l’objectivité et de la neutralité qu’il affiche, l’hebdomadaire tient ainsi un discours sous-jacent : l’imagerie qu’il compose et applique à la symbolique élaborée du rituel d’État dont il rend compte, révèle le filtre de ses opinions et de son propre système de valeurs. The weekly magazine L’Illustration, accredited by the French Presidency in between the world wars to follow and cover all presidential journeys in France, fluctuated as to how it depicted such official pageantry. From 1918 to 1940, the journeys and public appearances of the successive heads of State were variously illustrated, depending on the iconography, centering and layout of the photographs selected by the editors, and thus reflecting their political options. Despite its reputation for objectivity and neutrality, the magazine thus reveals an underlying discourse : the imagery it constructed and applied to the representation of State ritual and its elaborate symbolism was filtered through its specific opinions and value system. Die Wochenzeitschrift L’Illustration, bei dem Elysee zur Berichterstattung über die Reisen der Staatspräsidenten im Frankreich der Zwischenkriegszeit akkreditiert, hat sich ihrer Rolle als Vermittlerin eines offiziellen Zeremoniells in tendenziöser Weise angenommen. Die Gewichtung der Aufmerksamkeit, die den verschiedenen Stationen und Gesten der Reisen der Staatschefs der Jahre 1918 bis 1940 in Bildreportagen zukommt, ist höchst uneinheitlich. Die Wahl der publizierten Bilder, der Kontext, in den sie gestellt sind, ihre Einbettung und Positionierung auf den Seiten verraten eine implizite Positionierung und Wertung seitens der Redaktion. Das Wochenblatt ist weit von der Objektivität und Neutralität entfernt, um deren Anschein sie sich bemüht, setzt sie doch mit ihrer ausgefeilten Bildersymbolik ihr eigenes Wertesystems zum Staatszeremoniell in Szene. |
